The National Legal Services Authority established the NLIU-Legal Aid Clinic (“NLIU-LAC” or “the Clinic”) on April 11, 2018. It is a student-run initiative aimed at providing legal assistance to socially and economically backward and marginalized sections of society who have difficulty accessing the judicial system. The University’s Faculty-in-Charge supervises NLIU-LAC, with the aim of serving students in achieving their scholastic, professional, and social objectives.
It is widely held that the government and legal professionals bear the major responsibility for providing legal help to the poor. The students of National Law Institute University, contrary to popular belief, opted to establish a Legal Aid Clinic to help solve the issue of access to justice.
The spirit of Article 39A of the Indian Constitution drives NLIU-LAC, which strongly believes that law is pro bono public, or for the public welfare. Its scope, however, is not limited to providing pro bono legal services. It also believes heavily in educating people about their legal rights, and as a result, it works to promote legal literacy, raise social awareness, promote alternative dispute settlement, and perform prison reformation programmes, among other things. This is accomplished through a variety of social media and real-world activities and events targeted at making India more legally aware.
